Retrospective Painting & Drawing
The recurrent theme in Kilfeather's art is the philosophical exploration of ethics, greed, power, ambition, jealousy and apathy. Counterbalanced with narratives of love, optimism and humour. Starkly and dramatically contrasting personal experiences inform the work. These experiences are the main source of inspiration for the expression of doubt and optimism in these paintings. Click, the triptych. Oil on canvas. Winner of a UK National Open ART Prize. Until philosophically understood then it becomes controversial.
Inspired by contaminated supermarket chiefs. Juxtaposed, then, by the ethically valid John Lewis, Waitrose, staff ownership agenda.

Inspired by and refers to the then actual Chief Executives of Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's Supermarkets.

That part of the painting also inspired by Elvis Costello's father, Ross's, role in the Secret Lemonade Drinker advert...Plus of course Fairytale of New York...

Click. Oil on canvas 60 x 48 inches.
Working with chromatic and monochromatic greys, a range of reds and a hint of yellow all subdued with greys; Click, oil on canvas, refers to the power of corporations, apathy of their victims and complicity of employees from chief executive down to the humblest customer facing supervisor who propagates lies and deceit.

Whereas Click “refers” to greed, power and abuse of power this is not what Kilfeather’s work is about. Kilfeather is striving to visually identify that single human trait, that which supersedes ethics and overrules every manifestation of God and integrity, convincing the guilty that they are beyond reproach.

The figures in this painting were inspired by the chief executives of the major supermarkets Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose, Sir Terry Leahy, Justin King and Mark Price. Also inspired by "I'm a Secret Lemonade Drinker" written and performed by Ross MacManus with vocals backing by his son Elvis Costello.

Click was winner of the National Open Art Exhibition 2010 Endowment Award.

This painting was also selected by the Atkinson Gallery for inclusion in the National MA and Postgraduate Contemporary Art Show, February/March 2010.

Oil on unprepared wallpaper lining paper. Curious narrative. Philosophical top of list theory: people love most the painting which the creating artist dislikes most. A West Dean lecturer insisted that Des remove this painting from the dust bin. That painting was the very first of Des's to sell, just days after being rescued from the bin, achieving a very acceptable price.
